Luxury cars? Fancy jewelry? Mansions? These are what people usually say when asked this question. Here’s my answer.
All of us desire to have a comfortable life. To have money to buy basic necessities in life. Most of us want to spend money on material things, clothes, jewelry, etc. Unfortunately, for many of us this, is not possible. In fact, a lot of people on the world are living in poverty. Unemployment is on the rise. In the UK, the unemployment rate for people 16 years old and above is 5.1% (as of Sept – November 2025).
While others have been blessed to have great jobs that pay handsomely, some people resort to illegal or get rich quick schemes in order to supplement their income or use them as their main means to earn. Others use gambling to double or even triple their wages. Lottery, a way to raise money by selling tickets and giving prices to ticket holders, is gambling. We all have heard news of someone winning hundreds of millions of pounds in the lottery and a many have envied them. I, am one of these jealous people. Then, a few years, later, these same lottery winners will be featured in news/ web articles again revealing that they are poor again as they spent all their winnings on drugs, prostitutes and fancy holidays.
Seeing this, I thought to myself that I will not be like them if I win the lottery. I will still be working, but no longer be doing over time. I will have nice things and holidays but I will still work. Not because I am greedy (I am not greedy, I am generous…I think) but because i believe in the saying ” idle hands are the devil’s playthings”. When you got nothing to do, you resort to mischief or wrongdoings. I also believe that holidays will lose its meaning if you are always going away on holidays. One of the definitions of a holiday is a period of recreation and leisure. A PERIOD!! So if you are always on a holiday what do you call that? If you are in hotels or yachts, constantly, without doing anything else, what do you call that? What word has this definition?
If I am always away spending my lottery winnings abroad or at home, I might get bored and then resort to mischief just to pass the time. Sometimes money changes people. Quite true especially (at least for me) with the nouveau riche. These look down on others and treat them awfully. I believe having to work even though you don’t need to makes you grounded. It will make me believe that I have a purpose and it will help me connect to people.
Having a lot of money is not a bad thing but it should not change who we are. We should continue being ourselves despite of it. After all, you won’t be able to take it to your grave.
What about you? What would you do if you win the lottery.
